Companion on the Droid

I renewed my membership with Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association, which among other things, gets me a copy of the Thru-Hiker's Companion in Adobe pdf format.  I have an unbound version of AWOL's AT Guide that, with it's clever integration of the trail's profile with milestones, will be my primary navigation tool. But the Companion has amplifying info that fills in where the AT Guide leaves off - History of the trail, and of the areas it passes through, park regulations, where to find AYCE buffets in town ...

The fact that it is available as a pdf, means I can load it on my Droid, and it's weightless!

After renewing my membership, I got an email on my phone from Sly with a link to the file. I clicked on the link, and the file downloaded.  I opened the Adobe Reader app, and it found it right away.  Turning the phone sideways and expanding the text to fit the screen resulted in sharp, perfectly legible text.  Hyperlinks with updates worked flawlessly. Town maps are sharp and perfectly legible.

What more could a boy want?

  1. That's nice!! A practical way to bring both guides...

  2. It is nice to have the Companion on your smartphone. I've also got the unbound 2012 NOBO AT Guide. Have you decided how many pages you'll carry at one time? I'm still struggling with the whole resupply and bounce box thing. I'm counting on "all will be revealed" as I go along. I'm really getting short of time, but it would be nice to have the AT Guide on pdf, not to mention the Data Book.

    1. Heh! I seem to be living the "All will be revealed" program right now. Been splitting stuff into drop boxes, and thought, "I'm not even gonna want hot cereal for breakfast in the heat of the summer."

As for pages of the AT Guide. I figure just a few pages past my next mail drop so I can be planning ahead.

  3. I checked out a book scanning service and for $51.42 I can have my copy of the AT Guide scanned to pdf format for my Kindle. Way out of my price range, though it would be nice. Think I'm going to just figure out a way to carry it. Just not sure how many pages to carry, though maybe start out with the whole thing and mail home the pages that I finish.

    1. I'm thinking the AT Guide will be my prime navigation aid. Wouldn't want to fire up my droid every time I wanted to look at it. Then there's the issue as to how graphics get rendered on some devices. The eInk kindles are great with text, but fine graphics not so much. I'd think enough pages to get you to your next mail drop, maybe a couple extra, in a plastic bag, stuffed in my cargo pocket is the way I'll go.

    2. Some folks use the pages they're done with as fire starters ...
